Revolutionizing Care for Noncommunicable Diseases: Expanding Access through Primary Health Care.

As world leaders convene for UNGA80 and the 4th High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health, this side event will highlight how the Primary Health Care (PHC) approach can transform care for people living with NCDs—reducing economic burdens while improving health and well-being. This side event will bring together ministers of health, global leaders, and strategic partners to share successful initiatives and strategies for improving care and management of NCDs based on PHC.
As world leaders gather for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly and the 4th High-Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and the Promotion of Mental Health and Well-being, there is an urgent need to move from promises to action and accelerate efforts to improve the health and well-being of people living with NCDs based on the Primary Health Care (PHC) approach.

Addressing these diseases also represents a significant economic opportunity, as some estimates predict that failure to treat them could result in annual losses of approximately 4% of total GDP in many countries in the Americas between 2020 and 2050. This economic burden stems from reduced productivity, increased health care costs, and decreased labor force participation, which undermine economic and fiscal conditions.

This side event will bring together ministers of health, global leaders, and strategic partners to share successful initiatives and strategies for improving care and management of NCDs based on PHC. These include the experiences of structural transformation of the health system in Mexico through the consolidation of the Mexican Social Security Institute - Welfare (IMSS-Bienestar), which has expanded the effective coverage of interventions for NCDs on a territorial, public, and free basis; Saudi Arabia's commitment to health system transformation under Vision 2030, including its investments in PHC strengthening and digital health solutions for NCD management; and regional models for the expansion of policies and treatment packages, and mechanisms for accessing affordable diagnostics and medicines.
